  Schoelzel Homestead 118 Plainfield Road, Hawley, MA Great for the beginner or moderate snowshoer, this workshop offers a chance to explore the woods under the velvety light of the (almost!) full moon as well as a bonfire and hot cocoa afterwards. Musicians welcome to bring their instruments for an impromptu session around the fire. The hike will be on moderate terrain with some elevation. Bring your own equipment or borrow from sponsoring partner EMS, who will be available at the event to fit and train beginners. FREE. Advance registration required.

Guyette Farm, Gloyd Street, Plainfield, MA Learn the ropes of animal tracking with John Foster, founder of the New England Naturalist Training Center. The tracking will be interspersed with time for group observations and explorations, such as winter botany and animal strategies for winter survival. John’s skill and patience as a teacher, his experience as a wildlife researcher and expert naturalist comes to life in this tracking workshop. Limited to 25 participants ages 10+. FREE. March 31, 2012 The first annual Berkshire Highlands Pentathlon features many of the best outdoor adventures in our area. The five events - a 10k trail run, 23 miles of road biking, 5 miles of kayaking, a mile to the top of the mountain and a downhill ski to the finish - can only happen on the same day at the turn of the seasons. It may be a bit cold for road biking and kayaking and a bit warm for skiing, but where else can you do it all on the same day? Register here
