Help Conserve A Plainfield Treasure
July 12, 2009

PLAINFIELD, MA (July 12, 2009)---  On Sunday, July 12, the Student Conservation Association (SCA) and Franklin Land Trust will team up for a day of service, calling on volunteers to join them at the Guyette Farm on Gloyd Street in Plainfield.  Volunteer activities will focus on constructing a recreational trail through the property and will be led by well-trained SCA/AmeriCorps members.  A morning and afternoon session of volunteering will be offered as well as a midday natural history program presented by the Franklin Land Trust.  The morning session will begin at 9:30am, the talk will take place from 12:30-1:30pm, and the afternoon session will start at 1:30pm.  Participants may choose to attend one or both sessions and are invited to stay for a short celebration at the conclusion of the work day.

The Guyette Farm, donated by Evelyn Guyette to the Franklin Land trust in 2008, encompasses 107 acres of northern hardwood, softwood, and open field.  With its diverse habitat and rich, farming heritage, the upcoming service project’s major goal is to make the land available for educational and recreational use through the construction of a public hiking trail.  In addition to the trail, members of the SCA will be working on a bridge to traverse the streams that flow across the farm’s property.

Volunteers from the surrounding communities will provide an integral role to the success of the project, both in the immediate construction phase and in the long term conservational and educational aspects foreseen at the farm.

The project at the Guyette Farm is 1 of 36 statewide high priority conservation service projects in which the SCA Mass Parks AmeriCorps volunteers will participate this summer.  The Mass Parks AmeriCorps program, which is both the first residential and the first environmental AmeriCorps program in Massachusetts, is a partnership of the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), SCA, the Massachusetts Audubon Society, the Massachusetts Service Alliance and the Corporation for National and Community Service.

SCA, founded in 1957, has since grown into the nation's leading conservation service organization for young people while inspiring numerous other service corps across the country.  For more information, visit the SCA website at www.theSCA.org.    Print flyer
