Madeline McKinnon Field

  • Total Acreage 10.606
  • Restriction Type FEE
  • Date Completed November 18, 2013
  • Interest Holder FLT

In 2013, the neighbors of old Shelburne center came together to save the 10 acre hayfield at the heart of their town from development. Generous donations to FLT facilitated the purchase of the property by the Franklin Land Trust and the community has ensured that Madeline's Meadow will be maintained as the working hayfield that Madeline McKinnon's family has stewarded for over 80 years. Under the Franklin Land Trust's ownership, Madeline's Meadow will be hayed annually by local farmers with the primary goal of agricultural productivity. The public's enjoyment of Madeline's Meadow is a priority, as well, and the Franklin Land Trust plans to install a short 200 ft. trail through the 1 acre woodlot in the northern corner of the parcel to allow walkers and picnickers to enjoy the scenic view across the meadow and over Shelburne center.

Activities: Hiking, picnicking, photography, birding
Hiking Difficulty: Easy

Access: Shelburne Center Rd and Allen Rd trailhead and parking, Shelburne MA
