Red Pine Harvest – A Forest Walk On Roberts Meadow Water Supply Property

You are invited to join the Northampton Department of Public Works and their consulting forester on a walk to view an active forest harvest occurring
on water supply property off of Chesterfield, Kennedy and Sylvester Roads. Red pine trees in this area are being removed due to the presence of red
pine scale (Matsucoccus resinosae). This pest is expected to cause complete mortality of most of the red pines within the next 1-3 years. Many of the
red pine trees in this area have already died from the pine scale infestation, or are nearly dead.

MA Licensed Forester, Michael Mauri will lead the forest walk describing the relationship between a resilient forest and water quality protection; the
condition and fate of the red pine trees on water supply property; and the aerial techniques (e.g. crane and tree climbing) being used to fell the
trees without damaging the sugar maple/hardwood understory.
No registration is required. For more information contact Nicole Sanford – Sr. Environmental Scientist with Northampton DPW at (413) 587-1376 or nsanford@northamptonma.gov.

WALK BEGINS AT THE INTERSECTION OF KENNEDY AND CHESTERFIELD ROADS
(CARPOOLING IS ADVISED DUE TO LIMITED PARKING ALONG ROADWAYS)
