Neither Migration Nor Hibernation: The Winter Adaptations of Animals Who Stick it Out

On Wednesday, December 10th, 2025 from 10AM to 11:30AM, we will be learning about the winter survival techniques of wildlife at Guyette Farm in Plainfield MA.

How do animals survive the deep chill of winter? From the enchanting to the downright gross—and from the brilliantly clever to the just plain weird—wildlife that stays active through the cold months has evolved an astonishing variety of ways to make it through.

Join the FLT and naturalist Cesi Marseglia for a lively winter walk exploring the ingenious, species-specific survival strategies of creatures who don’t hibernate or migrate, but instead tough out the winter months. You’ll look closely at tracks, clues, and adaptations that help them thrive even in the frostiest weather.

Bring binoculars and a hand lens if you have them—you never know what tiny or far-off wonders you might spot!

Who knows—you might even come away with a few winter survival tricks of your own.
