Shelburne Falls Fire Tower Trail

Length of Public Access Trail: .7 miles (The overall trail is longer if you continue on state land to the Fire Tower)

This strenuous public access trail climbs 1.25 miles to the stone fire tower at the top of Mt. Massamet.The trail is well marked, and hikers can choose between a steep trail and a less steep trail both leading to the fire tower. Hikers can climb up the historic Shelburne Fire Tower, constructed in 1909, for a three state view. From the tower, hikers can connect to Mass Audubon’s High Ledges Wildlife Sanctuary and enjoy more trails and views. For more information about this trail visit

Hiking Difficulty: strenuous (steep slope)

Location: The trailhead is at the kiosk located at the junction of Rt. 2 and Halligan Avenue in Shelburne. Park on the uphill side of Halligan Avenue.
